Reliance Jio will soon launch an affordable laptop at 15000 rupees ($184) which is among the most affordable laptops available in India and aims to duplicate the popularity of its cheap phone, according to two sources who have intimate knowledge of the issue.
Indian billionaire, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance, is well-known for disrupting business by offering a hefty price. Jio, the company’s telecoms unit, is widely acknowledged for reshaping the world’s No. 2 mobile market by offering cheap 4G data plans and free voice services in 2016. In 2016 the company followed in 2017 with the 4G JioPhone, which cost $81.
The laptop, later known as JioBook, is expected to be equipped with a 4G sim. The laptop will be accessible to customers, such as schools and government institutions, starting this month and will be made available to the general public within about three months, sources claimed. Like the JioPhone and the JioPhone 5, a 5G-enabled version is expected to follow.
“This is as large as JioPhone,” one of the sources said to Reuters.
The sources could not be identified because the plans for the launch have not been released to the public. Jio India’s largest telecom company boasting more than420 a million customers has not responded to requests for comments.
The JioPhone is India’s best-selling smartphone that costs less than $100 and accounted for a fifth of the market segment in the last three quarters, as per Counterpoint Research. The segment makes up nine percent of the country’s smartphone sales.
JioBook will be running using JioOS, the JioOS operating system sources confirmed, adding that Microsoft’s applications will be accessible. JioBook will be using Qualcomm chips based on Arm Ltd’s technology, they added.
The laptop will compete with a few options in this price segment from Acer, Lenovo, and the Indian firm Lava.
However, it may face opposition in a nation where laptops run Microsoft Windows dominates.
“The challenge for acceptance by users of the technology will be user awareness … Non-Windows (OS) is also a major disappointment.”
At present, HP and Dell dominate laptop sales in India, a market with 14 million units sold annually. This could increase by 15% thanks to the introduction to JioBook, Pathak estimates.
According to one of the sources, the JioBook is being manufactured locally by a local contract producer, Flex, with Jio hoping to sell “hundreds of thousands” of units by March.
Jio, advertising its laptop as a replacement for tablets for employees working outside of the office, has raised about $22 billion from investors worldwide, like KKR & Co Inc and Silver Lake, in 2020.
